American Samoa has elevated its State of Emergency to Code Red and went into lockdown last night after their Department of Health confirmed community transmission of COVDI-19 in American Samoa.

Talanei News reports the Department of Health quarantine employee from the January 27th flight is believed to have contracted the virus and 7 out of 8 of their family members have tested positive.

DOH has said that some of the family members attended a church service yesterday in Leone but the identity of the church has not been disclosed.

Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga announced on KVZK-TV that as of midnight Tuesday night Samoa time the territory will move to Code Red and the government and some businesses will shut down for one week after which they will assess the situation and decide the next steps to take.

He asked for the public’s cooperation in stopping the spread of the virus.
