Samoa is now under Tsunami watch.

This was announced by CEO of the Meteorology office, Lealaisalanoa Frances Reupena during a special announcement from the National Emergency Centre.

This is a result of the volcanic eruption in Tonga at 5:26 pm (local time) Saturday evening.

In the meantime Lealaisalanoa said the tsunami watch is in effect until 5am Sunday morning.

She further urged the public to be prepared and stay away from the coastlines.

The FESA Commissioner, Tanuvasa Petone said their teams have been mobilised to the areas near the coastline, to warn against fishing at this time and urged the public to be prepared in any case of a tsunami.

"Also please adhere the advises issued for your safety."

Meanwhile more than 100 families have been evacuated in Palauli and Satupaitea after waves struck the coastline, crashing into some homes, leaving some damaged.

This was confirmed by Acting Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo in response to questions from Radio Polynesia.

Auapaau said it is better to be safe than sorry.

“We don't know if there is another eruption tonight or an earthquake due to this eruption, but its better to be safe than sorry.

He added there were also reports from Manono, that waves went into their homes.

A caller from, Vailoa Palauli, told Radio Polynesia a wave struck their home and this occurred close to 6pm.

He said that several families homes near the coastline were damaged as a result including his residence.

The first notice was issued by the Met office at 7:30 pm, an hour after the volcano erupted in Tonga.

The volcanic eruptions was heard loud and clear in Samoa.
