Member of Parliament, Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo has called on the Ministry of Police and Prison to review the Narcotics Act 1967 given the growing -presence of hard drugs in the Country.

During Parliament this week, the Deputy Leader of the Human Rights Protection Party says the mandatory jail term for convicted drug defendants should be a minimum jail time to be 14 years.

As well as strengthen the enforcement of the act, and to consider having programs which can educate people who possess and consume illegal drugs on the effects of these illegal substance.

The former Deputy Prime Minister emphasised the need to protect Samoa’s borders and to bring in the scanner for the customs office to assist with detection of importation of illegal weapons.

In the last two months, police conducted four separate drugs raids, in Vaitele Fou, Nu’u, Faatoia and Vaigaga where police uncovered drugs including ice, marijuana, guns, live ammunitions and money among drugs paraphernalia.

One of the raids landed the Assistant Electoral Commissioner, Afualo Darryl Mapu behind bars with his colleague, Marie Fanueli to await their appearance in the Supreme court for criminal mention.
